Sober Living with IOP

Sober living with intensive outpatient (IOP)

Treatment during the day, a safe and structured sober home at night. Pairing sober living with an IOP gives you clinical care and a recovery community at the same time.

Overview

What it is

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is clinical addiction treatment you attend while living outside a facility: group and individual therapy for several hours a day, a few days a week. A sober living home is the place you live while you do it.

Put together, they cover each other's gaps. IOP gives you therapy, relapse-prevention skills and clinical support. Sober living gives you a drug- and alcohol-free home, a routine and people around you in the hours treatment doesn't cover: evenings, weekends and the rest of your life.

Many people step from detox or residential treatment straight into this combination. It's also a common choice for people who need more support than outpatient therapy alone, but want to work, study or reconnect with family while they recover.

A good fit if you are…

  • People leaving detox or residential treatment who still need clinical care
  • People whose home environment makes it hard to stay sober during treatment
  • People who want to keep working or studying while in treatment
  • Anyone whose treatment team recommends a sober living environment

What's included

What you get

  • A Get Clean bed in one of our men's homes or our women's home
  • A schedule built around your IOP, with house routines that fit treatment hours

  • Help planning what comes next as you step down from IOP to regular outpatient care

Step by step

How sober living with IOP works

Every person's path is different, but it usually looks like this.
  1. Step 1: Call us and your treatment team

Tell us where you are now. If you're finishing detox or residential treatment, your team can help set up an IOP; we'll check which homes have an open bed.

  2. Step 2: Start IOP

IOP is typically several hours a day, a few days a week. Your program sets the exact schedule.

  3. Step 3: Live the routine

Between sessions you work, look for work or volunteer, keep up with chores and meetings, and are home by curfew.

  4. Step 4: Step down, stay connected

As IOP ends and you move to less intensive care, the house is still your home base, for as long as it helps.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

An intensive outpatient program is a structured level of addiction treatment you attend while living outside a treatment facility. It usually involves group and individual therapy for several hours a day, a few days a week.

IOP is clinical treatment, so many health plans cover it, subject to your benefits. Sober living rent is usually paid privately, because insurance generally doesn't cover housing. We'll go over costs with you before you move in.

No. Get Clean San Diego provides sober living, not clinical treatment. IOP is provided by a licensed treatment program, and you live in a Get Clean home while you attend it.

Often, yes. Length of stay is something we talk through together, and for many people the months after IOP are when a stable, sober home matters most.
