Sober living

Structure that turns early sobriety into a life

Get Clean San Diego provides alcohol- and drug-free homes for adults who need structured accountability to move into a healthy, independent life. Here's how it works.

What sober living is (and isn't)

A sober living home is a shared house where everyone has agreed to live without alcohol or drugs. It's the step between treatment and fully independent life: you work, pay rent and run your own days, but you do it inside a structure, with people around you who are doing the same thing.

It isn't treatment. There are no therapists or medical staff on site, and we don't provide detox. If you need that first, call us anyway: we'll point you toward it, and talk about a bed for when you're ready.

Our founder got sober in 2014 and found that staying sober at home, around people who didn't understand and who still drank or used, was the hardest part. A good sober living changed that. Get Clean San Diego exists to give others the same chance, done even better.

Our four pillars

  • Establish your routine

Get back to the basics by developing a healthy, productive schedule and maintaining daily commitments around the house. Routine is what carries you on the days motivation doesn't: a regular bedtime, chores, meetings and a purpose for the day.

  • Immerse yourself in recovery

Actively participate in a 12-step based recovery program and find yourself a sponsor who is sponsored. We help residents find strong local meetings and expect them to keep going.

  • Build accountability

Let us help keep you in check as you reap the benefits of your recovery. Clear standards and consistent expectations, applied to everyone, so you can start to see what recovery gives back.

“It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels.”Alcoholics Anonymous
  • Set healthy boundaries

Gather support to help you navigate personal relationships as you embark on life in sobriety. That includes family, friends and partners, and the relationships that pull you back.

House structure

Every home runs on the same house agreement, and it applies to everyone. Residents say the consistency is what sets our houses apart.

  • Alcohol- and drug-free, always. No exceptions, inside the house or out.
  • Random drug and alcohol testing, so the house stays safe for everyone.
  • Chores and a household routine. Everyone keeps the house clean, and it shows.
  • 12-step involvement. Regular meetings and a sponsor who is sponsored.
  • Purpose during the day. Work, school, volunteering or an active job search.

A typical day

  1. Step 1: Morning

Chores done, then off to work, school, volunteering or a job search.

  2. Step 2: Daytime

Show up for your commitments. Residents who are still looking for work get practical help and leads from the house team.

  3. Step 3: Evening

A 12-step meeting, time with your sponsor or step work, then time to unwind at the house with people who get it.

  4. Step 4: Night

Back before curfew. Random drug and alcohol tests can happen any day, which keeps the house safe for everyone.

Every resident's schedule is different. This is the shape of a day, not a fixed timetable.

Frequently asked questions

A sober living home is a shared, alcohol- and drug-free house for people in recovery. It isn't treatment: there are no therapy sessions or medical staff on site.
